Purpose of Position and Scope of Responsibility

Supervises and coordinates the activities of nursing personnel on assigned unit(s) to maintain continuity of nursing care in conjunction with the hospital/nursing mission. Works in collaboration with the Director/CNO to ensure standardization of systems, identification of efficiencies, integration of performance improvement strategies which support BMHCC nursing goal attainment while fostering patient, physician, and employee satisfaction. Works collaboratively with all hospital departments to operationalize nursing integration, service line development, and standardized nursing practice. Incumbent is accountable for departmental management 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This position is under the general direction of the Nursing Director/CNO.

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities

E 1. Assist with the development of operational plans by assessing and evaluating unit(s) service to meet the needs of the patients and increasing the department's contribution to the overall hospital outcomes.

E 2. Supports and defines policies that promote patient's fundamental right to considerate care that safeguards their personal dignity and respects their cultural, psychosocial and spiritual values in an effort to meet patient's care needs and preferences.

E 3. Assures competency of staff to assess the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, educational, and environmental status of the infant, child, adolescent, adult and older adult patient in a systematic and continuous manner.

E 4. Organizes and directs patient care utilizing the nursing process on assigned unit(s) by coordinating all services to provide for quality patient outcomes.

E 5. Promotes ongoing assessment of patient/family's response to nursing and medical treatment evaluating the effectiveness of the patient's care plan and appropriateness of disposition.

E 6. Promotes education to patient/families by staff to enhance safety, continuity of care, and knowledge of health.

E 7. Participates in performance improvement activities on unit(s) by identifying areas of opportunity to ensure quality is consistent with established guidelines.

E 8. Maintains a safe, functional, and effective environment for patients, and staff.

E 9. Supports staff in meeting mandatory requirements as determined by hospital and regulatory agencies.

E 10. Actively participates in promotion of Service First activities and goal achievement.

E 11. Maintains financial budgetary responsibility through management of patient acuity/productivity workload standards, materials resource consumption and review of operations to identify opportunities for departmental cost reduction and/or optimal resource utilization.

E 12. Implements orientation, training and educational strategies relative to clinical areas of responsibilities to ensure staff competency for new and existing staff members. Assesses such programs in collaboration with Nursing Staff Development to assure training and educational efforts meet changing clinical needs.

E 13. Performs other accountabilities/responsibilities as directed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge/Education - Graduate of approved School of Nursing. Bachelor's preferred.

Experience - Two years experience in acute care setting. Demonstrated leadership skills.

Licensure, Registration, Certification - Licensure as an RN.

Physical Requirements - Constant walking, standing, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling heavy objects.

Environmental Conditions - Potential for cuts, bruises, muscle strains, exposure to airborne pathogens via blood and body fluids and exposure to contagious diseases. May be exposed to hazardous materials.

1. Assesses staff ability to complete initial admission assessments and document findings in a timely and accurate manner in the patient's record.
2. Verifies that staff obtains relevant information from patient/family, identifies patient family discharge and educational needs.
3. Assures that appropriate resources are available to support nursing interventions to meet patient care needs.

4. Organizes and directs patient care utilizing the nursing process on a particular unit by coordinating all services to provide for quality patient outcomes.

Main Activities
1. Supports staff in the development of a plan of care pertinent to patient diagnosis/care needs that is derived from input of patient, family and/or significant others.
2. Assures that patient's plan of care meets basic physical, industrial, and discharge needs and that all is documented timely in the medical record.

2. Continuously assesses medication and safety variance.
